What is the Turkish Kangal dog?
The Kangal is a breed of dog that is native to Turkey and is known for its strength, loyalty, and protective nature. The Kangal is considered one of the oldest breeds of dog in the world and has been used for centuries as a livestock guardian, protecting flocks of sheep and goats from predators such as wolves and bears.
Kangals are large dogs, weighing between 50 and 80 kg (110 to 176 pounds) and standing up to 32 inches (81 cm) tall at the shoulder. They have short, thick coats that come in a range of colors, including fawn, cream, and gray. Their heads are large and powerful, with strong jaws and a broad muzzle.
In addition to their protective nature, Kangals are known for their intelligence and independent spirit. They are fiercely loyal to their families and can be excellent guard dogs, but also require firm and consistent training to ensure they are well-behaved and obedient.
Kangals have become popular outside of Turkey in recent years, but it’s important to note that they are still primarily a working breed and require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and healthy. As with any breed of dog, it’s important to research the needs and temperament of the Kangal before deciding if it’s the right fit for your lifestyle and family.
